Riverside is a busy city, and sometimes, it may feel like there are no great places to spend time with your dog. However, there are actually several attractions your furry friend will love, as well as several dog parks with stellar reviews from other dog-lovers. If you’re a dog owner living in Riverside or plan to move into the area, take a look at our list of some of the best spots to take your four-legged friend.
Dog Parks
Dog parks are fantastic places that cities create and design with dogs in mind, where they can safely run, play, and interact with other dogs. Some dog parks have special “meet-ups” where dog owners of specific breeds meet to let their pets frolic together, which can be a great socializing experience for your dog. There are three dedicated dog parks in Riverside:
- Carlson Dog Park. This dog park, located on Mission Inn Avenue in Riverside, is an off-leash dog park. The grounds are fenced, so there’s no need to worry about your dog running loose. There is a special small dog zone and play equipment for dogs.
- Pat Merritt Dog Park. This dog park is located on Limonite Frontage Road in Riverside. It is a fully fenced park with a designated small dog area and a drinking fountain for thirsty pups.
- Riverwalk Dog Park. Located on Riverwalk Parkway, this dog park is fully fenced and offers off-leash fun for dogs. There are separate areas for large and small dogs.
When you take your dog to a dog park, “off leash” does not mean “unsupervised.” Keep an eye on your dog at all times for both your dog’s safety and the safety of other dogs. If your dog is not very socialized, young, untrained, or has any other similar concerns, use extra caution at the dog park to prevent injuries.
Some dog owners are wary of dog parks because it is unfortunately common for dog owners to simply let their dogs run loose without any supervision. This can lead to fights with other dogs and very angry owners. Always supervise your dog while visiting a dog park to make sure your pup has a safe and fun experience.
Additionally, some dog parks provide pooper scoopers and waste bags to clean up after your dog, but it’s a good idea (and a courteous one) to always have your own supply on hand. When you take your dog to a dog park, make sure you clean up your pet’s messes.
Around Town
If you have errands to run around Riverside, there are several restaurants, hotels, and other businesses that are dog-friendly. However, it is important that you keep California leash laws in mind. For example, it is illegal to attach your dog’s leash to anything unless it has shelter and food. So if you stop for a cup of coffee, take care not to leave your dog leashed outside or you run the risk of incurring a misdemeanor offense.
The California leash law does not apply to dogs that are in a vehicle or in transit, or if the dog’s owner is in physical possession of the dog. This is common with very small or “toy” breeds that some owners like to carry in special carrying bags while they shop around town. Wherever you go with your dog in Riverside, be mindful of the posted signs regarding whether or not dogs are allowed in certain areas, and make sure you always have a backup leash and a supply of waste bags with you. Even the best-trained dogs can be unpredictable at times, so exercise care and caution when traveling through Riverside with your dog to ensure your own safety and wellbeing and that of others.
